The Land Rover Defender is inarguably one of the most popular Land Rover models in the San Antonio, TX area. Get Ready for the 2022 Land Rover Defender Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle

According to a Carbuzz report, the 2022 Land Rover Defender has been uploaded to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) website. This could mean only one thing – the Defender PHEV is headed for the USA. The Defender Plug-in Hybrid has been in existence for quite some time at least in Europe. In fact, it is sold alongside the regular Defender in the UK for roughly $4,000 more. The Defender PHEV was unveiled for the European market about a year ago. However, Land Rover USA did not confirm whether it would be sold in the USA at the time.

2022 Land Rover Defender Performance Specs

The Defender PHEV will be powered by the same turbocharged 2.0-liter, in-line four-cylinder P300 gasoline engine that you see on the standard 2021 Land Rover Defender and Land Rover Defender S trim levels. However, the hybrid powertrain in the Defender PHEV will be designated as the P400e, which hints at a slightly higher power output. While the standard P300 makes 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, the Defender PHEV’s hybrid powertrain will work alongside a 141-horsepower electric motor to produce a combined power output of 398 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque.

Also, while the P300 Land Rover Defender models could accelerate from 0-60 mph in roughly 7.6 seconds, the Defender PHEV can sprint to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds, making it the fastest non-V8 Defender model.

Fuel Efficiency

Apart from the impressive power and acceleration, the 2022 Defender PHEV can return an impressive 71 MPGe (gas and electric combined). Land Rover claims a 27-miles all-electric range for the PHEV in the electric drive mode. This should be able to cover most of your local commuting in the San Antonio area. As far as charging is concerned, the Defender PHEV will support DC fast charging that will charge it up to 80% in just 30 minutes. However, if you use a standard 7kW AC adapter, it can take up to two hours.

The Defender PHEV will use the same permanent all-wheel drive (4WD) system and Terrain Response feature as the standard Defender. You can expect it to be just as capable an off-roader as the regular Defender, and the instant torque from the electric motor will surely come in handy when off-roading.

When will it be available?

Details of when the Land Rover Defender PHEV will arrive at dealerships across the US remain unclear at the moment. However, we suspect it to start shipping as early as the first half of 2022. That said, the Land Rover Defender PHEV is just one of the many Defender variants that Land Rover has in the works, including a three-row Defender model.
